Lyddon On Top Of Subaru World

The Saugeen Triathlon Club\'s Ann Lyddon

The Saugeen Triathlon Club's Top Triathlete Ann Lyddon

Grimsby - At a breakfest banquet on Sunday, November 29th The Saugeen Triathlon Club’s Ann Lyddon was crowned one of the top three triathletes in her age group in the Subaru Series this past race season. Second place overall finishes in both The Ontario Sprint Series and The Ontario Triathlon Series, allowed Lyddon to serve notice that her trip to the 2009 World Triathlon Championship to represent Canada in Austraila in September was well earned. Great racing Ann! Now the real work begins; it’s harder to stay on top than it is to get to the top. Good luck in 2010!

Opps! McCutcheon Also A Subaru Star

Durham - It seems that I have forgotten a very important piece of information about one of our most prestigious athletes. In my report on the outstanding placements and accomplishments of our triathletes and duathletes involved in finishes in the Subaru Series overall points placements, I overlooked an outstanding performance by not only one of our most successful athletes but also one of our most active club members. This omission was completely unintended and regrettable. I offer my most sincere apology to my friend, athlete and fellow club member. With respect, I submit this addendum to my original report:

The Saugeen Triathlon Club’s talented, multi-sport athlete Anne McCutcheon shone in the overall end-of-season points in the Subaru Series’ Ontario Duathlon Series where she claimed 10th spot out of 57 in the women’s 30 to 34 age group, accumulating 125 points in competition in the 2009 season.

In addition, McCutcheon also claimed 1st place in her age group at the Tri-A-Tri event at the Subaru Series’ Northern Triathlon in Orillia in mid-August. While there are no points available for finishes in Tri-A-Tri events in the Subaru Series, her performance was still outstanding.

Anne is one of what appears to be a growing line of female multisport athletes succeeding and stirring pride at The Saugeen Triathlon Club. Great Season Anne!

Super Athlete Faulkner Banquet Speaker

Dunkeld - World Class Triathlete and Cyclist Nathaniel “Nat” Faulkner will be the guest speaker at the year-end banquet for the Saugeen Triathlon Club at the Dunkeld Restaurant on Sunday, November 29th.

After having spent well over half his life at the pointy-end of sports, traveling and training, he has a wealth of stories, and learning from trial and error. One never knows where on the globe Faulkner will turn-up next. You can be sure it will be on a bike and he will be causing a stir.

In 2008 at the The World Ironman Championships in Kona, Faulkner did his first triathlon in 14 years. With only seven months of training, he recorded one of the best bike times in the race and finished as the second Canadian to cross the finish line.

He has competed in the famed RAAM - Race Across America. It is a continuous over 5000 kilometer race from the Pacific to the Atlantic. His team averaged over 38km/h through rain, three mountain ranges, stop signs, car accidents, and tears.

He has bike toured from Inuvik above the Arctic Circle south to the Panama Canal. Page sixty-eight of the latest edition of Triathlon Magazine Canada has a story about his bike tour of France following the Ironman race in Nice.

In addition to his racing and athletics, Faulkner coaches athletes and cyclists on subjects from “How to plan your off season (and winter) to maximize results for your ‘on-season’”, “Bike Positioning and Aerodynamics - he has a power point presentation that Specialized made on the aerodynamic benefits of wheels, helmet, frame, TT bars so newer triathletes can see where they can obtain the best aerodynamic improvement regarding money spent”, and “How to use a spin bike (or stationary trainer) to maximize your triathlon bike leg. He calls it a potential great training tool even if most spin classes use it more for general fitness than cycling performance”.

As well, he has rubbed shoulders with some of the giants in cycling and multi-sport over the years including Steve Hed (aerodynamics positioner of Lance Armstrong), who has been a friend and adviser since he was 16. Presently he trains with C3 and works with Personal Best where he trains for triathlon with their high performance team and Canadian Olympic hopeful Sean Bechtel. Following his time with us, he is heading to California to train for a month and then he off to Arizona for a couple of months to help run winter training camps for Personal Best.

Faulkner is funny, busy, entertaining, knowledgable and never boring! Get out your calendars! It’s time to mark the date for the year-end Club Banquet! The 2009 Saugeen Triathlon Club Year-End Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, November 29th.

It will be at the Dunkeld Restaurant which is located just west of Walkerton. This year’s banquet will include our first annual Club awards. There will be 10 categories to nominate your fellow members for.

The banquet will begin at 5 PM. From 5 PM to 6 PM will be a social hour. From 6 PM to 6:30 PM will be a short annual general meeting for the club.

Faulkner will entertain and inform us during dessert and coffee. At 8 PM our 1st annual club awards will be presented, followed by the door prize draws and more social time. Dinner will be the famous Dunkeld buffet, which will include a soup and salad bar, roast beef, baked ham, turkey and dressing, seafood in a white wine sauce, pasta, a variety of vegetables and potatoes, a selection of desserts, and tea and coffee.

Saugeen Members Dominate In Subaru Series

Vineland Station - On Sunday, November 29th The Subaru Series will honour the triathletes and duathletes that topped their age groups in competition in the Subaru Series this past race season. The Saugeen Triathlon Club is proud to have seven of our members place in no-less-than 12 age groups over three race series representing our club in this series.

Not only did club members place in the Subaru Series standings; they were dominate in a few cases. To qualify for points in any of these racing series, you must have finished in the top 15 in your age group in a race. The more you race, and the more top 15 finishes you record, the more points you accumulate in each series’ standings.

Saugeen Club Fun In Owen Sound

Owen Sound - On Sunday, October 25th four members of The Saugeen Triathlon Club ventured to Harrison Park in Owen Sound to run in the Owen Sound Family YMCA’s 1st Annual Family Y Autumn Colours Run. Accompanying our members were a number of participants and run leaders from the Hanover, Durham and Mount Forest Run/Walk Clinics.

For the Run/Walk Clinic participants, this events was a goal race for many of them. The run courses were on trails throughout the park and featured distances of two kilometers, five kilometers and 10 kilometers. For our members, it was a great excuse to do one of the things we do well - run!

Danica Metcalfe and Christelle Smith met the challenge of the 10 kilometer course. Danica finished in 4th place out of 11 in the women’s 20 to 40 age group in a time of 58:31. While Christelle claimed 5th place out of 11 in the same age group, recording a time of 1:03:15.

Jamie Graham and myself tackled the five kilometer course. Jamie bagged 7th spot out of 14 in the men’s 20 to 40 age group, booking a time of 28:15. I placed in 5th spot out of 12 in the men’s 41 and older age group with a time of 21:00 flat.

A number of our run clinic participants grabbed podium spots in their runs. I don’t have to tell any of you who are involved in the Run/Walk Clinics the joy you feel when you see new runner succeed in their first runs. The organizer’s of this run promise a bigger and better run next year.

Benninger, Swain & Quesnel Complete 1st Half-Marathons At Niagara

Kim Quesnel, Alaina Swain, Anne McCutcheon & Dave Benninger

Kim Quesnel, Alaina Swain, Anne McCutcheon & Dave Benninger

Niagara Falls - On Sunday, October 25th, under beautiful blue sky’s basking in ‘just right temperatures’, four members of the Saugeen Triathlon Club mastered the Niagara Falls Half-Marathon.

A success story from the Saucony learn to run program, Dave Benninger completed his first half-marathon in 2:06:48 placing 418/620 Male overall. This from a man, who two weeks ago was convinced he would be coming in around 2:30! But, we all know with his devoted training and dedication he would be a surprise to himself.

Perhaps the most nervous of the bunch, sporting Sponge Bob Square Pants apparel prior to the race, much to the delight of many runners, Alaina Swain proved she is on her way to a long career of running posting a first half-marathon time of 2:01:44 grabbing 277/1127 Female overall.

Showing great courage and self-confidence, Kim Quesnel simply stated that she would finish her first half-marathon in under two hours. Kim proved she could be a speedy woman in a skirt crossing the finish line in 1:58:56 for 212/1127 Female overall.

Looking for a personal best, Anne McCutcheon suffered though the 21.1 kilometers in 1:37:36, for an outstanding 18/1127 Female overall.

It was a day for amazing personal accomplishments, that would have not happened without our Saugeen Triathlon Club. From the speedy track workouts, to the building of friendships that created a perfect atmosphere of group runs. We all know that this isn’t the end of our running careers, but just the beginning, there will be many more races, many more laughs, many more aches and pains, and many more finish line pictures.
