Hanover - We are very excited at the Board! At the first BOD meeting of the new year, with your brand new 2010 BOD, a very big and new commitment was made that will help keep our club strong and active for the foreseeable future. With unanimous support, the BOD made the decision to move forward and support head coach Lynda Magor in implementing our new youth program.
Following the election of your BOD executive officers from a very capable group of Directors -Secretary/Treasurer, Christelle Smith, President-Elect, Danica Metcalfe, and President, yours’ truly - head coach Magor presented her vision of the new youth program. After much discussion about a new membership structure, fees and training schedules, the BOD granted the new program its’ blessing. Along with coach Magor, director Jamie Graham will be assisting with the program.
With the birth of The Saugeen Surge, the STC will be providing a fully coached and supported youth program aimed at 12 to 17 year olds preparing to train and compete in OAT Kids Of Steel and Junior events. There will be one formal coached workout each week involving swimming, running and cycling, along with all other elements related to triathlon. All Saugeen Surge team members will be encouraged to participate in all other club workouts that they are eligible to attend and participating in.
An additional positive spin-off of the new youth program is our new family membership option for joining the STC. In launching the new youth program, the BOD has made another large step towards being an all inclusive multi-sport club and promoting our “family” atmosphere.
Magor and Graham have a great deal of work ahead of them, and when they are ready, they will indeed be looking for other interested members to help out. In the mean time, Fun, Fitness and Personal Bests for your kids are finally available. Get them away from those screens and off those couches!
Not only will the new youth program provide the club with new members for years to come, it is also the goal to possibly produce some fine young multi-sport athletes in the future - maybe the next Simon Whitfield!
Get out to one of our Open House and Registration Nights for all the information on The Saugeen Surge!

STC members Jaqui Wong and Kristine Schipper, along with two friends, at the Durham Resolution Run
Durham/Mount Forest - The Saugeen Triathlon Club’s Jamie Graham hit a home run as Run Director of the STC’s First Annual Resolution Runs in Mount Forest and Durham. Close to 50 runners and walkers, of all ages, spent New Year’s Eve Day in Mount Forest and New Year’s Day in Durham, navigating 5K and 10K courses in support of the local Food Bank.
With a donation to the Food Bank as the only entry fee, the generousity of the participants was more than obvious as over 150 pounds of food and cash donations filled the back of an SUV bound for the Food Bank.
Graham, along with help from Gary Ghent in Mount Forest, drummed up outstanding support from sponsors. All participants received door prizes and refreshments.
While most are patiently waiting for spring, and the impending good weather of racing and training season, Graham is already busy preparing for next year’s events. He promises bigger and better. Get your 2011 resolutions ready!

The Saugeen Triathlon Club's Top Triathlete Ann Lyddon
Grimsby - At a breakfest banquet on Sunday, November 29th The Saugeen Triathlon Club’s Ann Lyddon was crowned one of the top three triathletes in her age group in the Subaru Series this past race season. Second place overall finishes in both The Ontario Sprint Series and The Ontario Triathlon Series, allowed Lyddon to serve notice that her trip to the 2009 World Triathlon Championship to represent Canada in Austraila in September was well earned. Great racing Ann! Now the real work begins; it’s harder to stay on top than it is to get to the top. Good luck in 2010!

Guest Speaker Nathaniel "Nat" Faulkener, Daryl Neve & Head Coach Lynda Magor

In addition to a great meal and outstanding entertainment, the event featured the introduction of the club’s 2010 Board of Directors and the awesome support of the club’s sponsors. Durham - It seems that I have forgotten a very important piece of information about one of our most prestigious athletes. In my report on the outstanding placements and accomplishments of our triathletes and duathletes involved in finishes in the Subaru Series overall points placements, I overlooked an outstanding performance by not only one of our most successful athletes but also one of our most active club members. This omission was completely unintended and regrettable. I offer my most sincere apology to my friend, athlete and fellow club member. With respect, I submit this addendum to my original report:
The Saugeen Triathlon Club’s talented, multi-sport athlete Anne McCutcheon shone in the overall end-of-season points in the Subaru Series’ Ontario Duathlon Series where she claimed 10th spot out of 57 in the women’s 30 to 34 age group, accumulating 125 points in competition in the 2009 season.
In addition, McCutcheon also claimed 1st place in her age group at the Tri-A-Tri event at the Subaru Series’ Northern Triathlon in Orillia in mid-August. While there are no points available for finishes in Tri-A-Tri events in the Subaru Series, her performance was still outstanding.
Anne is one of what appears to be a growing line of female multisport athletes succeeding and stirring pride at The Saugeen Triathlon Club. Great Season Anne!

The Saugeen Triathlon Club - Your Club needs you and your leadership skills. Your club need you help set it’s direction and impliment that plan.
The most important order of business relating to the banquet is your participation in the club. Until now, we have run the business of the club with an organising committee of sorts. While it has been successful, we are in need of a proper organising structure. As well, some of our original organising members are stepping down to focus on other important things in their lives and other business in the club. We need some of you to step forward and take on leadership roles.

Dunkeld - World Class Triathlete and Cyclist Nathaniel “Nat” Faulkner will be the guest speaker at the year-end banquet for the Saugeen Triathlon Club at the Dunkeld Restaurant on Sunday, November 29th.
After having spent well over half his life at the pointy-end of sports, traveling and training, he has a wealth of stories, and learning from trial and error. One never knows where on the globe Faulkner will turn-up next. You can be sure it will be on a bike and he will be causing a stir.
In 2008 at the The World Ironman Championships in Kona, Faulkner did his first triathlon in 14 years. With only seven months of training, he recorded one of the best bike times in the race and finished as the second Canadian to cross the finish line.
He has competed in the famed RAAM - Race Across America. It is a continuous over 5000 kilometer race from the Pacific to the Atlantic. His team averaged over 38km/h through rain, three mountain ranges, stop signs, car accidents, and tears.
He has bike toured from Inuvik above the Arctic Circle south to the Panama Canal. Page sixty-eight of the latest edition of Triathlon Magazine Canada has a story about his bike tour of France following the Ironman race in Nice.
In addition to his racing and athletics, Faulkner coaches athletes and cyclists on subjects from “How to plan your off season (and winter) to maximize results for your ‘on-season’”, “Bike Positioning and Aerodynamics - he has a power point presentation that Specialized made on the aerodynamic benefits of wheels, helmet, frame, TT bars so newer triathletes can see where they can obtain the best aerodynamic improvement regarding money spent”, and “How to use a spin bike (or stationary trainer) to maximize your triathlon bike leg. He calls it a potential great training tool even if most spin classes use it more for general fitness than cycling performance”.
As well, he has rubbed shoulders with some of the giants in cycling and multi-sport over the years including Steve Hed (aerodynamics positioner of Lance Armstrong), who has been a friend and adviser since he was 16. Presently he trains with C3 and works with Personal Best where he trains for triathlon with their high performance team and Canadian Olympic hopeful Sean Bechtel. Following his time with us, he is heading to California to train for a month and then he off to Arizona for a couple of months to help run winter training camps for Personal Best.
Faulkner is funny, busy, entertaining, knowledgable and never boring! Get out your calendars! It’s time to mark the date for the year-end Club Banquet! The 2009 Saugeen Triathlon Club Year-End Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, November 29th.
It will be at the Dunkeld Restaurant which is located just west of Walkerton. This year’s banquet will include our first annual Club awards. There will be 10 categories to nominate your fellow members for.
The banquet will begin at 5 PM. From 5 PM to 6 PM will be a social hour. From 6 PM to 6:30 PM will be a short annual general meeting for the club.
Faulkner will entertain and inform us during dessert and coffee. At 8 PM our 1st annual club awards will be presented, followed by the door prize draws and more social time. Dinner will be the famous Dunkeld buffet, which will include a soup and salad bar, roast beef, baked ham, turkey and dressing, seafood in a white wine sauce, pasta, a variety of vegetables and potatoes, a selection of desserts, and tea and coffee.
